One on one training from a good local instructor.
He can have all the kit and the right machine, but if he does not know how to ride it, he is knackered.

Depends on how much you’re willing to spend..My kids are always losing their goggles and gloves for the low end price. boots can run you up to $400+ but I can usually find a really good pair of Fox or A-stars for $200 or so..Then there is chest protectors, kidney belts, helmets, jerseys and pants..All the name brand gear have their own casual line also with everything from shoes to pajamas…My son wears the Fox tennis shoes and loves them ($50-$100)

Goggles with tearoffs, like said are good. Sweet must haves are underarmor shirts/shorts to wear underneath the gear so they can wear it inbetween heats and races. Those are pretty reasonable. Gear is very high, you can get them race socks to put underneath their boots, or some grips from a catalog(I like Tucker Rocky and Dennis Kirk catalogs). Or perhaps an ATV magazine subscription so they can drool over all the new stuff!

Gift certificate or a pre-paid credit card, you cant go wrong with these(just remember) parts, apparel, tools are expensive. so, be sure to put over $100.00(just to give you an example).

If your 18 year old is good, he probably has sponsors helping him with his gear and quad. I find it nice for someone that has all the help he needs by ways of parts, helmets, gear, etc to help him pay his entry fee into some of the races….
A gift card for gas to help with gas expenses, stuff like that helps the local pro riders a ton……
